Pear Tree Cottage
A storybook escape by the sea, tucked into the heart of Shaldon
Step into a slower pace of life at Pear Tree Cottage — a beautifully restored, Grade II listed thatched retreat where 17th-century charm meets laid-back luxury. Hidden in the centre of Shaldon, yet just a two-minute wander from the beach, quay, and village life, it’s the kind of place where mornings begin with sea air and end in the glow of a private garden at dusk.
Why you’ll love it here
Everything is within easy reach, yet the cottage feels wonderfully tucked away. The village hums gently with cafés, shops, and pubs, while the coast is always calling — whether for a swim, a stroll, or simply to watch the tide roll in.
Inside, there’s space for everyone to settle in comfortably. Four thoughtfully styled bedrooms sleep up to six guests, including a serene master with en-suite, a welcoming double, a full-sized bunk room, and a cosy single. With three bathrooms, mornings stay easy, even with a full house.
Outside, the magic continues. A private walled garden — filled with flowers, pear trees, and tumbling wisteria — offers a peaceful spot for long lunches, evening drinks, or simply doing nothing at all.
Inside the cottage
The sitting room greets you with low beams, soft sofas, and an easy, relaxed feel — perfect for unwinding after a day by the sea. There’s space to gather, space for children to play, and all the comforts you’d expect.
At the heart of the home, the open-plan kitchen and family room brings everyone together. A classic shaker kitchen with granite worktops and a range cooker makes cooking a pleasure, while the large dining table invites slow meals and good conversation. French doors open onto the garden, letting light and fresh air drift in.
A separate utility room adds practicality, with a shower, WC, and laundry facilities — ideal after sandy beach days.
Out and about
Shaldon’s coastline is full of small delights. Wander through the smugglers’ tunnel to Ness Beach, explore the wider stretches of Shaldon and Teignmouth, or simply settle on the sand for the day.
A short drive takes you to Dartmoor, where wide open moorland, ancient woods, and dramatic tors offer a complete change of pace. Closer to home, you’ll find the Shaldon Zoo, the Ness, and the charming ferry crossing to Teignmouth — all easy, all memorable.
The essentials
WiFi and gas central heating keep things comfortable year-round, and there’s allocated parking for one car. To preserve the thatched roof, BBQs and open fires aren’t permitted — but with the garden and village on your doorstep, you won’t miss them.
Your coastal hideaway awaits
Pear Tree Cottage is more than a place to stay — it’s a place to settle in, switch off, and savour Devon at its best.

This is our 3rd consecutive stay at Peartree cottage and it's like coming home. We love the cosy yet modern feel. The extension flows so smoothly from the original thatched part to the present day. The garden is so special with the gorgeous peartree and secluded by the beautiful old sandstone wall. A real suntrap. Lovely to relax in at any time of day. Katrina, Anthony and Stacey are so friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. We are sad we were unable to book this one for next year but are looking forward to spending another stay at Oystercatcher's Court. Hoping we can book Peartree again for 2027. Fingers crossed!
Pear Tree is probably the best place to stay in Shaldon, and I have stayed in many over the years. Private walled extremely sunny garden with beautiful flowers. The shortest walk to the local shops, cafes and pubs - not to mention the beach. The cottage itself a wonderful mix of ancient thatched and modern but tasteful extension with excellent amenities. Most importantly a great cozy atmosphere and welcoming feel as soon as one enters. If unbooked I would always choose this one first without hesitation!
What a find, beautiful cottage in Shaldon. We came down to spend some time with our grown up son and attend a family event not too far away. We were joined for part of the weekend by my brother, sister on law and their daughter. There was plenty of room for us all to spread out if needed, but we could all sit together aswell, which we did to catch up. The cottage is well equipped with plenty of crockery, cutlery and utensils. There are pubs and cafes short walks away to eat or just have a drink with some lovely sea views. Parking is a bit tight but right outside the property so very handy. Would thoroughly recommend
